We acknowledge that Surrey Schools are located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Katzie, Kwantlen, Semiahmoo, and other Coast Salish Peoples. We recognize and respect the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous peoples and their lands. As we work, learn, and play on these lands, we commit to fostering a spirit of reconciliation and respect for Indigenous histories, cultures, and contributions.
Celebrating Student Book Choice
We had a great time celebrating the Surrey Schools Book Awards! Students from all over the district voted for their favourite books from a special list full of exciting and meaningful reads. This program is more than just reading—it’s about sharing ideas, thinking deeply, and enjoying great stories together. A big congratulations to all the readers, nominees, and winners who made it such a fun and successful event!
As we head into summer, the adventure doesn’t stop! The Summer Reading Club is a fantastic way to keep the reading momentum going. Whether you're diving into graphic novels, fantasy epics, or heartfelt memoirs, there’s a book out there waiting to spark your imagination. Visit your local library, pick up your reading log, and join a community of readers who know that books can take you anywhere.

June Joy: Celebrating Stories, Voices, and Community Through Reading
As the school year winds down and summer peeks around the corner, June is a month full of celebration, reflection, and inspiration in Surrey schools. From recognizing outstanding student readers to honouring diverse histories and identities, there’s no better time to celebrate the power of books and the joy of reading.
June is also Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. In classrooms and libraries across Surrey, students explored Indigenous literature, listened to traditional stories, and engaged in meaningful conversations about truth, reconciliation, and respect. Books by Indigenous authors helped bring these voices to life, fostering understanding and connection through storytelling.
Throughout June, we also celebrated Pride Month—an opportunity to uplift 2SLGBTQIA+ voices and stories. From picture books to young adult novels, students explored literature that reflects the diversity of gender identities and sexual orientations, promoting empathy, inclusion, and belonging. Pride-themed book displays and classroom discussions helped create safe, welcoming spaces where every student feels seen and valued.
Asian Heritage Month & Canadian Jewish Heritage Month
May was full of creativity and discovery! We wrapped up our reading of the Surrey Schools Narrative Nonfiction selections, sparking great discussions and reflections.
Students also took on the Gravity Track Challenge, designing cars from recyclable materials using the design process. It was exciting to see their ideas come to life and race down the track!
